reducing pollution with pavers
If your driveway needs replacing, consider switching to a permeable pavement. Conventional asphalt or concrete surfaces catch and funnel water-along with pesticides, oil, and other contaminants-into already overworked sewers.
Permeable pavements can be made of asphalt, concrete, gravel, flagstone, and grass, and you can find them in any home center. Interlocking paving systems made of concrete or recycled plastic, use a grid system to prevent compaction and to drain the water to underlying soil, filtering certain pollutants and replenishing underground water sources.
Another benefit of a permeable driveway with natural land cover is that it reduces the “heat island effect.” Urban and suburban areas are generally hotter than surrounding rural areas because impervious materials used in driveways, roads, buildings, and other structures absorb the sun’s energy, forming “heat islands.”
Special Note:
Real pavers- not look-alikes stamped in concrete-keep runoff from causing pollution.
